I have a question about:
-
Buying / Finding GloFish® fluorescent fish

I live within the United States:

I live outside the United States:
We appreciate your interest in our extraordinary GloFish® fluorescent fish. Unfortunately, they are currently available for purchase only within the United States. While we are studying the viability of selling the fish outside the United States, we have no definite plans at this time. If you live in Europe, Canada, or Australia, please note that regulations prohibit the marketing of any genetically modified organisms, including our tropical fluorescent zebra fish, until they are cleared through an extraordinarily stringent review process. Due to the time and cost involved with this process, it is unclear when we might be able to market our fish in these areas. For all areas outside of the United States, please continue to monitor our website for any updates on the availability.

Caring for my GloFish® fluorescent fish

I think my fish is pregnant -
what should I do?
Aside from their color, fluorescent zebrafish are the same as other zebrafish in every way. This includes everything from general care and temperature preferences to growth rate and life expectancy. Accordingly, females carry unfertilized eggs upon reaching maturity, resulting in a "pregnant" look. However, they will not produce offspring unless spawned with male zebrafish. In the event that your fish do reproduce, please remember that their sale is covered by a substantial number of patents and related intellectual property. Because of this, any intentional breeding and/or subsequent sale of the fish is prohibited. For a complete license statement, please visit www.glofish.com/license.html.

My fish seems to be sick -
do you know what is wrong?
If you have specific questions about your particular fish regarding a potential illness, the best suggestion we can offer would be to contact your local fish store and/or a local veterinarian who works with fish, as they are going to be the best sources for guidance in such matters. As we hope you will understand, there are many factors which may contribute to the health of a fish, and without actually examining the fish, it is often impossible to diagnose the problem. When assessing any symptom, it is important to remember that aside from their color, GloFish® fluorescent fish are just like other zebrafish.
-
My fish is behaving very strangely -
what should I do?
Like other animals, fish are individuals with their own unique "personalities". While their actions may sometimes seem strange to us, there is a relatively wide variety of behaviors that zebrafish can normally display. However, if you have any doubts as to whether your fish's behavior is normal, please do not hesitate to contact your local fish store and/or a local veterinarian who works with fish. Both are fantastic resources for information and advice in such matters.
-
What size aquarium do I need? (Stocking density?)
GloFish® fluorescent fish are a type of zebrafish, which are schooling fish. Because of this, they are able to thrive in relatively high densities compared to many other fish. While the exact recommended stocking densities for zebrafish vary depending upon source, we believe it is fine to keep 2 to 3 zebrafish per gallon provided your aquarium has good filtration and aeration systems. As always, we recommend consulting with the experts at your local fish store before starting a new aquarium or adding to an existing community.
-
Do I need a filter?
While not required, we do strongly recommend that a filter be used. Because an aquarium is a living biological system, it will produce various toxins which should be removed from the water. A filter provides a good start and can be vital to maintaining healthy fish. Without a filter, water quality can deteriorate quickly; therefore if you are not using one, we recommend changing at least 25% of the water in your tank each week and limiting the number of fish to no more than 2 per gallon. For additional information on aquarium filters, please click here.
-
How can I distinguish between males and females?
Males are longer and more slender around the stomach, while females have a rounded, whitish looking stomach, and carry unfertilized eggs upon reaching maturity. This will often result in a "pregnant" look.
-
Are GloFish® compatible with other fish?
Like non-fluorescent zebrafish, our fish are community fish and will "play well" with other fish. However, not all fish are this way, so we generally advise that people check with their local fish store for specific information on whether their existing fish will peacefully co-exist with fluorescent zebrafish. Alternatively, for a partial, but still significant, listing of other community fish, please click here. (Please note that zebrafish are listed on this page as "Zebra Danio".)
-
Are GloFish® freshwater fish or saltwater fish?
Like any other zebrafish, GloFish® fluorescent zebrafish are freshwater fish. They should not be placed in a saltwater environment.

Will there be any new colors or species of GloFish® fluorescent fish?
While we do not have any near-term plans for additional colors or species, we continually monitor the research field for new types of fluorescent fish that we might be able to commercialize. Scientists all around the world are working with fluorescent fish, whether it's to help protect the environment or come up with new disease-fighting drug therapies. As more fluorescent fish suitable for commercialization become available, we will of course be very happy to bring them to the marketplace for sale to the public. Please continue to monitor our website for any updates. Thank you!

What are the restrictions on breeding GloFish® fluorescent fish?
As outlined in our licensing statement, the intentional breeding and/or sale, barter, or trade, of any offspring of GloFish® fluorescent ornamental fish is strictly prohibited. In accordance with our licensing statement, in certain limited educational related circumstances, we allow our fish to be reproduced provided the offspring are not sold, bartered, or traded. As we hope you will understand, it is necessary for us to protect the tremendous resources we have invested in developing and commercializing our fish.
