  • Most Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Can GloFish® be sold or purchased outside of the United States?
GloFish® cannot be purchased or sold outside of the United States, and there are no circumstances where we are able to assist with such a purchase. While we are studying the viability of selling the fish outside the United States, we have no definite plans at this time.
  • I think my GloFish® may be sick.  What should I do?
If you have specific questions regarding a potential illness, the best suggestion we can offer would be to contact a local veterinarian who works with fish and/or your local fish store, as they will often be the best sources for guidance in such matters.  There are many factors which may contribute to the health of a fish, and without actually examining the fish, it is extremely difficult to accurately diagnose the problem.  When assessing any symptom, it is important to remember that aside from their color, GloFish® fluorescent fish are just like other zebrafish.
  • Is my GloFish® pregnant?
No. Aside from their color, fluorescent zebrafish are the same as other zebrafish in every way. This includes everything from general care and temperature preferences to growth rate and life expectancy. Accordingly, females carry unfertilized eggs upon reaching maturity, resulting in a "pregnant" look. However, they will not actually lay eggs without the presence of a male.  Even when males are present, it is extremely rare for them to successfully reproduce in a home aquarium without outside help.  In the unlikely event that your fish do reproduce, please remember that their sale is covered by a substantial number of patents and related intellectual property, and any intentional breeding and/or subsequent sale of the fish is prohibited. For a complete license statement, please visit www.glofish.com/license.html.

  • What should I do if my fish is behaving in an unusual or aggressive manner?
Like other animals, fish are individuals with their own unique "personalities".  While their actions may sometimes seem strange to us, there is a relatively wide variety of behaviors that zebrafish can normally display.  However, if you have any doubts as to whether your fish's behavior is normal, please do not hesitate to contact a local veterinarian who works with fish and/or your local fish store.  Both are fantastic resources for information and advice in such matters.

    • Why is my fish acting aggressively towards its tank mates?
Aside from their color, GloFish® fluorescent fish are the same as wild-type zebrafish in every way, including their behavioral characteristics.  We have found through a great deal of observation that their disposition is no different than that of any other zebrafish, meaning they are good community fish.  While zebrafish do not usually exhibit aggressive behavior, keeping a zebrafish alone can occasionally cause some zebrafish to act aggressively.  To avoid this, it is generally recommended that they be kept in groups of at least five or six.  Again, we suggest speaking with a local veterinarian who works with fish and/or your local fish store as they may have additional recommendations regarding this issue.

  • Aquarium Setup & Maintenance Questions
Below are answers to the most common questions we receive about setting up and maintaining home aquariums.  In general, if you have a specific question about your particular aquarium, the best source for guidance is your local fish store.  In addition to checking with local experts, you may also find the tips and information on our Care page to be helpful.

    • Is there a recommended tank size and/or stocking density for GloFish®?
GloFish® fluorescent fish are a type of zebrafish, which are schooling fish. Because of this, they are able to thrive in relatively high densities compared to many other fish. While the exact recommended stocking densities for zebrafish vary depending upon source, we believe it is safe to keep up to 3 zebrafish per gallon, provided your aquarium has good filtration and aeration systems.  As always, we recommend consulting with the experts at your local fish store before starting a new aquarium or adding to an existing community.

    • What are the recommended pH levels?
Aside from their brilliant color, fluorescent zebrafish are the same as other zebrafish, and accordingly, the pH level requirements are the same.  While the recommended pH level for zebrafish varies somewhat depending on the source, it is our understanding that a pH range between 6 and 8 is fine.  For additional information on this, we would recommend checking with your local fish store.

    • Do I need to use a filter?
While not absolutely required, we strongly recommend that a filter be used. Because an aquarium is a living biological system, it will produce various toxins which should be removed from the water. A filter provides a good start and can be vital to maintaining healthy fish. Without a filter, water quality can deteriorate quickly; therefore if you are not using one, we recommend changing at least 25% of the water in your tank each week and limiting the number of fish to no more than 1 per gallon. For additional information on aquarium filters, please click here.

    • Will blue (actinic) or black light harm my fish?
Blue (Actinic) Light:        We have never observed or heard of any problems related to the use of blue (or actinic) lighting with our fish.  It is also worth noting that people and animals are exposed to blue wavelength light every day, as it is part of the visible light spectrum.  As with any light, however, it is important not to keep it on continuously.  For additional lighting and display information, please visit our Display page at http://www.glofish.com/display.asp.
Black Light:         We have reviewed reports regarding the potential risks from black lights and have never found any basis for them, nor have we ever observed or heard of any first-hand problems.  Because of this, we have no reason to believe there is any concern with using black lights with our fish.  As with any light, however, it is important not to keep the light on continuously.

  • Other Common Questions:

  • Where can I Buy/Find GloFish® Fluorescent fish within the United States?
For a list of GloFish® fluorescent fish retailers in your area, please visit our store locator at http://www.glofish.com/locator.  If you live in California, please click here.  Alternatively, you can order GloFish® fluorescent fish online through Pet Solutions (click here for Starfire Red®, here for Electric Green®, and here for Sunburst Orange®) or Carolina Biological Supply Company (click here for Starfire Red®, Electric Green® and Sunburst Orange®).
  • What other fish are GloFish® most compatible with?
Like non-fluorescent zebrafish, our fish are community fish and will "play well" with other fish. However, not all fish are this way, so we generally advise that people check with their local fish store for specific information on whether their existing fish will peacefully co-exist with fluorescent zebrafish. Alternatively, for a partial, but still significant, listing of other community fish, please click here. (Please note that zebrafish are listed on this page as "Zebra Danio".)

  • How best can I differentiate GloFish® sexes?
Like non-fluorescent zebrafish, males are longer and more slender around the stomach, while females have a rounded, whitish looking stomach (because they carry unfertilized eggs upon reaching maturity). This will often result in a "pregnant" look.

  • Are GloFish® Freshwater or Saltwater?
Like any other zebrafish, GloFish® fluorescent zebrafish are freshwater fish. They should not be placed in a saltwater environment under any circumstances, as this would be lethal to the fish.

  • How can I become a Retailer/Wholesaler of GloFish® within the United States?
To purchase GloFish® fluorescent fish for a retail store or wholesale distribution, we would recommend first checking with your current supplier, as it is likely that they are already able to provide our fish.  However, if this is not the case, please fill-out and submit the form below and we will be happy to assist you.  If you are located in California, please click here.

  • Will There Be New Colors / Species of GloFish® Fluorescent Fish?
While we do not have near-term plans for additional colors or species, we continually monitor the research field for new types of fluorescent fish that we might be able to commercialize.  Scientists all around the world are working with fluorescent fish, whether it's to help protect the environment or come up with new disease-fighting drug or gene therapies.  As more fluorescent fish suitable for commercialization become available, we will of course be very happy to bring them to the marketplace for sale to the public.

  • Restrictions on Breeding GloFish® Fluorescent Fish
As outlined in our licensing statement, the intentional breeding and/or sale, barter, or trade, of any offspring of GloFish® fluorescent fish is strictly prohibited.  As we hope you will understand, it is necessary for us to protect the very significant investment we have made in the development of GloFish.  For more information on the patents and related intellectually property rights that cover our fish, a complete licensing statement can be found at http://www.glofish.com/license.html.  If you have any questions, comments or concerns about these restrictions, please feel free to contact us.

  • Are GloFish® Fluorescent Fish Dyed, Injected or Individually Altered?
No, they are born beautiful!  GloFish® fluorescent fish are traditionally bred; they are not dyed, injected or individually altered in any way.  Their unique color is a hereditary trait that is passed from generation to generation, just like any other genetic trait.  For more information about this topic, please see the question entitled, "Exactly how is the fluorescent protein gene added to the fish?" on the FAQ page of our website.
