Kids’ FAQ

Ever wondered where GloFish® come from?  Have questions about taking care of your GloFish®?  Curious about how aquariums work?  Keep reading!

Where do GloFish® come from?
Each color of GloFish® was developed by changing a gene in a zebrafish to make it fluorescent red, green, or orange.  This zebrafish then passed the fluorescent color to its offspring.  Because of this, each color of GloFish has the same ‘grandparent’ GloFish. For example, all of the Starfire Red® GloFish come from a single red fluorescent zebrafish.

Where does the fluorescent color come from?
The fluorescence in our fish comes from fluorescent protein genes in the fish that occur in nature, and originally came from marine organisms.

What does ‘fluorescent’ mean?
In this case, fluorescent means that means that GloFish® absorb light, then ‘send it back out,’ creating the impression that they are ‘glowing.’

What colors do GloFish® fluorescent fish come in?
GloFish® come in three colors: Starfire Red®, Electric Green®, and Sunburst Orange®.

Do GloFish® actually glow?
No, GloFish® absorb light and then send it back out. This creates the impression they are glowing, especially under a black light in a dark room.

Does the fluorescence harm the fish?
No. GloFish® are as healthy as other zebrafish, but they have a brighter personality!

How do GloFish® help fight against pollution?
GloFish were originally bred to help detect pollution in water. Scientists are currently working to make GloFish® ‘glow’ only when they detect pollution.
